Our Physicians

  • Jay Applebaum
    MD, FAAD

    Dr. Jay Applebaum was born in Brooklyn, New York and spent his formative years in South Orange, New Jersey. He attended New York University graduating with honors in 1976. He was awarded a Navy Health Science Scholarship that same year and attended New York University School of Medicine graduating in 1980. He began his internship at the Naval Hospital San Diego in Internal Medicine and the next year served as ship’s medical officer on the USS Peleliu, where he was instrumental in the rescue of 62 Vietnamese Boat People. After leaving the ship in 1982 he began a 3-year dermatology residency at the Naval Hospital San Diego. After completing his residency and board certification he went on to serve as staff dermatologist and later department chairman at the Naval Hospital Long Beach. He completed his Naval Service in 1988 at the rank of Commander.

    Once in civilian life, he became interested in laser surgery. He worked and taught dermatology residents and medical students at the Beckman Laser Institute and at the UCI Dermatology Clinic where he was an assistant clinical professor. In 1988 he went into private practice in Orange, California where his interests ranged from the diagnosis and treatment of skin disease to cosmetic procedures and laser surgery.

    Dr. Applebaum lives in Villa Park with his wife Terry. They have 3 adult daughters. He has been active in the Villa Park Rotary for many years where he has served as president and secretary and writing the club’s weekly newsletter. He also serves on the board of We Give Thanks, providing thousands of Thanksgiving meals at the Honda Center each year and assisting veterans at the Long Beach VA Hospital. He is also on the board of the Eddie Nash Foundation which provides education and guidance for Orange County Foster Youth. His outside interests include boating, golfing, raising alpacas and playing guitar.

  • Karol Dangaran
    MD, FAAD

    Karol is a native Californian and grew up in Orange County. She attended the University of California Irvine where she graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She then attended the University of San Francisco Medical School graduating with recognition in Alpha Omega Alpha - the Medical School Honor Society. She then completed her internship in internal medicine at the University of California Los Angeles before completing her dermatology training at the University of California Irvine in 1994.

    Dr. Dangaran has been practicing in Orange County for more than twenty years providing her patients with the highest quality of care in both medical and surgical dermatology. She is an active fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology. Dr. Dangaran has an interest in psoriasis and skin cancer. She also has training in both cosmetic and laser dermatology as well as surgical dermatology. Dr. Dangaran values her relationship with her patients and enjoys helping them attain their best skin health. Dr. Dangaran can often be found helping young high school students interested in medicine by allowing them opportunities to observe patient care. She also enjoys speaking at high school functions.

    Dr. Dangaran is kept busy visiting her children who all attend college on the East Coast. Her son attends law school and her two daughters are both interested in premed. When not traveling, she is an active volunteer with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Student of the Year Program and the Assistance League of Tustin. She enjoys spending time with her husband – a landscape architect as well as fitness training, traveling and watching Film Noir.

  • Mary Jung
    MD, FAAD

    Dr. Mary Jung was raised in southern California since the age of two when her family emigrated from South Korea. She attended college at the University of California, Berkeley and majored in Molecular and Cell Biology cum laude. She then moved across the bay to obtain her medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco, where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society.

    Initially pursuing an interest in internal medicine, Dr. Jung completed an internal medicine internship and residency at the University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals in Seattle. She then returned to southern California and practiced internal medicine for a couple of years. Once she decided to pursue a career in dermatology, Dr. Jung worked as a clinical research fellow in dermatology and then completed her dermatology residency training at the University of California, Irvine.

    Dr. Jung has been in private practice in Orange County for 17 years and has enjoyed fostering longtime relationships with her patients as well as welcoming new patients to her practice. She focuses on all aspects of dermatologic care, including medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology. She performs Mohs surgery as well. Dr. Jung is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.

    In her spare time, Dr. Jung enjoys being a wife, mother of two children, traveling to places far and near, and being an avid sports fan.

  • Wieke H Liem
    MD, FAAD

    Dr. Liem has been providing outstanding dermatologic care to Southern Californians for over 25 years. After growing up in Portland, Oregon, she graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and then attended the University of California Irvine College of Medicine, finishing among the top of her class with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. She completed her internship in Internal Medicine at the Oregon Health Sciences University and then finished her training in Dermatology at UC Irvine in 1993.

    She loves the practice of dermatology and the long-lasting relationships she has established with her patients and colleagues. She treats common and less common skin, hair and nail disorders. She also has extensive training in surgical dermatology, laser, and cosmetic dermatology, often being an early adopter of newer treatments. She understands how helping people feel better about their skin can have a great impact on their overall quality of life.

    Dr. Liem is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, a member of the California Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, the Pacific Dermatologic Association, the Dermatologic Society of Orange County, and the Women’s Dermatologic Society. She has mentored many young students who have interests in the medical field.

    When Dr. Liem is not in the office, she enjoys her time with her husband (also a physician) and their 2 sons (a chemical engineer and a premed student.) She remains very active in her community, volunteering countless hours with local schools, sports organizations, and the School Power Foundation. She also keeps busy kayaking, stand-up paddling, hiking, biking and time on the ski slopes, as well as less active hobbies such as knitting and baking, much to the joy of her family.
