Why Mohs Surgery?

When you receive a skin cancer diagnosis at Enhanced Dermatology of Orange County, serving Tustin, CA, and the nearby region, there are different procedures our doctors can perform. One of those options is Mohs surgery. If you're faced with a decision between Mohs and another option, here are some reasons why you may want to consider Mohs.

Damages Little of the Surrounding Tissue

First and foremost, when one of our Tustin, CA, dermatologists performs this procedure, they damage little of the surrounding tissue. The process consists of the practitioner removing affected tissue layer by layer, along with some of the nearby tissue. It's highly controlled, so the specialist will take as little of the healthy tissue as possible.

Has a High Cure Rate

Especially when compared to other procedures, Mohs surgery has a high cure rate for non-melanoma skin cancers, even ones that are high risk. That means, with this procedure, you have a high chance of the practitioner removing all the cancer. The procedure has a 99 percent or higher cure rate. Typically, other procedures only have a cure rate between 90 and 95 percent.

Boasts a Low Recurrence Rate

The recurrence rate of Mohs surgery is low because it's a precise process focused on getting as much of the cancer as possible. And often, it removes all the cancer, as noted in the previous section. Its recurrence rate is typically deemed as lower than that of other treatments.

Causes Little Scarring

Standard surgery to remove cancer using a scalpel often requires the dermatologist to remove more tissue than if Mohs surgery is performed. Therefore, there's more tissue that's affected by other treatments. With Mohs, however, the dermatologist aims to remove as little of the tissue as possible, which minimizes the amount of scarring.

Requires Only a Local Anesthetic

Certain skin cancer removal procedures require you to have some sort of sedative to ease the pain and reduce your level of unconsciousness or induce unconscious. This comes with its share of risks, and some patients don't like this idea. However, Mohs only requires you have a local anesthetic. You don't have to worry about the anesthetic wearing off and the unpleasantness that occurs with that or the potential for side effects.
